AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION
The American International Women’s
Association (AIWA), is a non profit making, Maltese licensed fund raising
organization. Women of all nationalities meet together in friendship and to
offer help to one another as well as raising funds which are then donated mainly
to local Maltese charities and some international organizations when the need
arises.
The association was founded in 1969 as the American Women’s Club of Malta. It
was established for the purpose of bringing together American women and wives of
American citizens for friendship, mutual assistance in settling in Malta and to
raise money for Maltese charities.
In September 1984 the Club became the American Women’s Association and women of
all nationalities were invited to become members.
In October 1992 the name was changed to American International Women’s
Association, a name that embodies both its origins and the international
dimension that it had acquired over the years.
Our present membership is around 140 individuals from 20 different nationalities
including many Maltese ladies. Most members reside in Malta but members who
leave the islands are invited to remain as overseas affiliates.
The dual purpose of the Association remains that of providing friendship and
raising money for charity. Activities include social and cultural activities
such as morning meetings, tours, lectures, lunches and other social events.
Money raised through these activities is donated to various, mostly local,
charities including children’s homes on the Maltese Islands.
AIWA is managed by a volunteer board, elected annually by the membership. The
administration of the Association is financed by membership dues, so that all
funds raised for charitable purposes are passed on to the various recipients.
Our charter remains to provide friendship, support and activities for women of
all nationalities and to offer assistance to those less fortunate.
